Let's clear this up
Common myths about textured hair
A lot of what you've been told about Black hair isn't true. Here's what the science actually says.
"Black hair doesn't grow."
Black hair grows at the same rate as any other hair type — around 1.5cm per month. The real issue is retention. High shrinkage and breakage make it appear not to grow, but the problem is almost always moisture and handling, not growth rate.
"Oils moisturise your hair."
Oils seal in moisture — they don't add it. Water is the only true moisturiser. Applying oil to dry hair without water first just locks in the dryness. Always apply to damp hair or directly after a water-based product to actually see a difference.
"Protective styles mean your hair is resting."
Your scalp never rests. Neglecting it under braids, twists, or locs leads to buildup, inflammation, and weakened follicles. Scalp care actually matters most when your hair is put away — out of sight shouldn't mean out of mind.

Three things most people don't know about their hair
Understanding how textured hair actually works changes everything about how you care for it.
Shrinkage is a sign of healthy hair
The tighter your curl pattern, the more moisture your hair retains — and the more it springs back. High shrinkage means high elasticity. That's not a problem to fix. That's your hair doing exactly what it's supposed to.
Your scalp health determines your hair health
Most people focus on the length they can see, but growth starts at the follicle. A dry, inflamed, or clogged scalp slows growth and causes breakage long before you notice it in the mirror. Treat the root, not just the result.
Protective styles still need scalp care
Locs, braids, and twists don't mean set it and forget it. Scalp buildup, dryness, and tension under protective styles are among the most common causes of preventable hair loss. What's underneath needs just as much attention.
